Because divorce is often a major life change, it is unsurprising that going through a divorce could affect your work life.  Apparently, this is also a problem for the rich and famous. TMZ recently reported that Mariah Carey showed up three hours late to her scheduled performance at New York City’s Rockefeller Center tree lighting ceremony because she was discussing her divorce with her lawyers.  When she did arrive, NBC’s producers told her they had cancelled the taping because of her absence and even then she could still be heard on the phone discussing her settlement agreement.

In New Jersey, there are a number of steps taken in a divorce in an attempt to reach a settlement or, if necessary, to have an decision ordered by the court.  The first steps are the filing or receiving of a divorce complaint and the opposing spouse’s answer to that complaint.  Each party must also file a Case Information Statement, or a detailed list of their finances.

If the parties are unable to come to an agreement on their own, they may be required to participate in an Early Settlement Panel.  Here, a panel will make a recommendation for settlement that the parties are free to accept or not. If they do not accept the recommendations, they may be required to attend mediation to discuss and settle their differences.  If the parties cannot come to an agreement during mediation, they may be required to attend an Intensive Settlement Conference, and ultimately go to trial if still no agreement can be reached.

As you can see, if the parties cannot work together to come to an agreement on their own, getting a divorce can be a long and arduous task that can interfere with other areas of life, such as work.  With the help of a skilled matrimonial attorney, like those at Sarno da Costa D’Aniello Maceri LLC, the process of getting a divorce can be made much simpler.  Not only will you receive zealous advocacy, but our attorneys also have the experience to make the procedural aspects of your divorce less stressful.  Call us today at 973-274-5200.
