Paul da Costa Obtains $32M Settlement in NJ Veterans Homes COVID Cases

Sarno da Costa D’Aniello Maceri LLC is proud to announce that our Partner, Paul M. da Costa recently achieved a $32 million settlement in which the State of New Jersey agreed to settle pre-suit with the families of residents at the Menlo Park and Paramus Veterans Homes whose deaths were attributed to the COVID.
These facilities were reported to have the highest COVID-related death tolls in the nation of any state-run veterans’ homes.
Paul testified in front of the New Jersey Legislature as part of his representation, and subsequently, the Legislature enacted several new laws aimed at the operation of the Veteran Homes, including requiring weekly reporting to state officials, allowing families to remove veterans from the home, increasing the minimum qualifications for administrators, and other changes to help prevent events like this from occurring in the future.
Mr. da Costa was quoted in an NJ.com article stating the following: “No amount of money can ever obviously replace the lives of the lost veterans, but my clients and I are satisfied that this settlement provides a good measure of civil justice and accountability,” adding that the fact a settlement had been reached before any lawsuits were actually filed, avoiding years of protracted litigation, was “significant to my clients being able to work towards obtaining closure.”
