Overview
Amos Gern is a 1967 Phi Beta Kappa graduate from Rutgers University in New Brunswick where he was a Henry Rutgers Scholar and received a BA with High Honors, magna cum laude, in Political Science. He graduated in 1970 from New York University School of Law. He has been a member of the New Jersey and New York State Bar Associations since 1971 and has been a Certified Civil Trial Attorney since 1985 and a Civil Trial Advocate through the National Board of Trial Advocacy since 1989. He has been named as a New Jersey Super Lawyer each year since 2005, and in Best Lawyers in America (New York Area) since 2012, in the specialties of plaintiff’s medical malpractice and personal injury litigation.
Amos served as an Assistant United States Attorney for the District of New Jersey from 1971 to 1974. Early in his career, he also served as the Municipal Prosecutor and Zoning Board Attorney in the Township of Livingston, where he resides.
Amos, Partner of the Firm, concentrates his practice in personal injury litigation, including automobile negligence, medical malpractice, professional liability, product liability, construction and industrial accidents, work-related injuries and other complex civil litigation.
From 2007 – 2008, Amos was President of ATLA-NJ, which was the forerunner of the New Jersey Association for Justice (NJAJ). He has held many leadership positions with NJAJ over the years and continues to serve on its Board of Governors to the present. He was NJAJ’s representative to the New Jersey Supreme Court Civil Practice Committee where he served for twelve years. In that capacity he was instrumental in addressing numerous reforms to our Civil Practice rules, most important of which involved an increase in contingent fees several years ago, and numerous efforts to enhance the discovery rules associated with personal injury and medical malpractice litigation. This has included addressing reforms designed to allow medical malpractice cases to be reached for trial more readily and limiting the abuse of the designated trial counsel rule.
Amos was awarded the New Jersey Association for Justice Gold Medal for Distinguished Service in February 2025. The National Board of Trial Advocacy President’s Award was bestowed upon Amos in October 2023. In February 2020, he was awarded the New Jersey Association for Justice Award for Trial Attorney Excellence (Gerald B. O’Connor Award). The Essex County Bar Association Civil Attorney Achievement Award in May 2016. Amos has been a frequent lecturer for NJAJ at Boardwalk and Meadowlands Seminars, as well as for the New Jersey ICLE and NJSBA.
