Faulty Sensors May Lead to Inaccurate Glucose Levels Posing Significant Health Risks for Users
Abbott Diabetes Care Inc. has issued a recall of certain FreeStyle Libre 3 and FreeStyle Libre 3 Plus sensors used in continuous glucose monitoring systems. These sensors, crucial for managing diabetes, have been found to provide inaccurately high glucose readings. These sensors continuously monitor glucose levels and allow users to adjust their treatments based on the data provided by the sensor. However, the faulty sensors may produce inaccurate high glucose readings leading to dangerous outcomes such as unnecessary insulin use, which can cause hypoglycemia (low blood sugar). Hypoglycemia if not recognized and treated promptly can cause serious complications, including loss of consciousness, seizures, central nervous system damage, brain injury, coma, and in extreme cases death.
The recall affects certain lot numbers of the FreeStyle Libre 3 and FreeSyle Libre 3 Plus sensors, and Abbott has instructed all users to immediately stop using any affected products. Abbott has initiated a replacement process, where users can verify the serial number of their sensors to determine if they are affected and request a replacement.
Users should visit www.FreeStyleCheck.com to check if their sensor’s been recalled by confirming the sensor’s serial number. The Federal Drug Administration has issued guidance on how to confirm a sensor’s serial number. Abbott has emphasized the importance of verifying glucose levels through fingerstick tests using a traditional blood glucose meter if there is any suspicion that the sensor readings are inaccurate.
Legal Options for Those Harmed by the Faulty Devices
Users who have experienced adverse health effects due to the faulty sensors may be eligible to file a lawsuit seeking compensation for their injuries. In the case of medical device recalls, a product liability lawsuit allows victims to be compensated for the harm they have suffered as a result of the defective product. In the case of this recall, individuals who have sustained injuries due to incorrect glucose readings and/or have experienced hypoglycemia because of over-administration of insulin may be entitled to financial compensation.
Filing a product liability lawsuit generally involves demonstrating that the product was defective and that the defect directly caused the injury. In this case, users must show that they relied on the sensor’s readings, which were faulty, and that the resulting incorrect glucose reading caused them to make medical decisions that led to their injuries. The lawsuit process includes gathering medical evidence, consulting with experts, and working with an attorney to establish the liability of the manufacturer.
