The Safety Institute has released its quarterly Watch List cataloging the top vehicle safety hazards and defects. In compiling the Watch List, The Safety Institute analyzed public data from the National Highway and Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) regarding vehicle defects, as well as Early Warning Reports and the Fatality Analysis Reporting System.
The Watch List reveals that the top vehicle defect involves the steering system in the 2012 Ford Focus. Problems with the steering in these cars are twofold: some consumers complained of the steering system randomly shutting off and others complained of cutting their hands on the steering wheel’s sharp metal edges.
The second most common problem in vehicles involves brakes on the 2011 and 2012 Chevy Cruze. Although General Motors recalled these cars because of their brake problems, many consumers reported continued brake failure even after the car’s brakes were supposedly fixed. A third problem was associated with speed control problems in various Toyota Camry models. Consumers reported that their cars would increase acceleration without their intent to speed up.
The Safety Institute, in creating the Watch List, hopes to prevent future accidents as a result of automobile defects. The Watch List could help regulators and manufacturers identify potential problems, and solve those problems before they result in major damage.
