A new federal rule that will benefit construction workers confined to small spaces. The Labor Department’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) issued the rule, which will hopefully protect construction workers as it does other workers.
The rule will be effective on August 3, 2015, and officials claim it will prevent 800 injuries among construction workers each year. Workers in a confined space, like a manhole, are at risk of a number of hazardous occurrences, including asphyxiation and explosions. The new rule will require workers to continuously monitor safety and provide training to ensure safe work environments. OSHA hopes that this new rule will prevent serious injury to workers, who are often unable to escape from small spaces in an emergency.
